Recording a Commercial Demo From Scratch

As a voice actor, having a demo reel is essential for showcasing your range and abilities to potential clients. While you may have several different demos for different types of voiceover work (such as animation, narration, etc.), it is especially important to have a commercial voiceover demo.

A commercial demo is a compilation of your best commercial voiceover work. But what if you don't have any work under your belt? Or what if, like me, you just failed to get copies of most of your spots? Whoops.

Sometimes this was due to my lack of focus or laziness. Other times, no matter how often I pestered the agency or producer, they never sent the file my way. Some of these ghosts of voiceover past haunt me -- I did a Dawn "Southern Sponge" spot that, gosh, I'd love to have.

While I have a nice little collection of work, I decided to record a commercial voiceover demo from scratch. And, just as I did with my animation demo, I used the incredible Richard Horvitz to direct and Patrick Torres to engineer. #dreamteam

Richard is the kind of director who is truly excited by voiceover. Our recording session was fun and just the right amount of silly while staying focused. As he always says, this is an opportunity for PLAY. Let go of results and have fun! If you are considering putting money into your career by recording a new demo (or three), I can't recommend Richard enough. 10/10

Richard wrote the scripts for my animation and commercial demos and was easily able to capitalize on my strengths and voiceover "brand." Part of this ease is because I have worked in the industry for 15 years. I know who I am, I know what my strengths are, and I know where I need to push myself. But the insight from Richard was invaluable- I could not have done this on my own!

The response to my demos has been outstanding. I am excited about what 2023 has to offer!

Here are a few reasons why every voice actor should have a commercial voiceover demo:

Stand Out from the Voiceover Competition

There are a lot of talented voice actors out there, and having a commercial voiceover demo can help you stand out from the crowd. By showcasing your skills and versatility in a focused and specific way, you can showcase your unique qualities as a voice actor.

Target Specific Types of Voiceover Work

Your commercial voiceover demo should showcase the types of commercial voiceover work you are best suited for; this allows you to target specific types of clients and campaigns rather than just casting a wide net and hoping for the best.
